Yesterday, (Sunday) and at last, we are in Queensland. Although I think someone has been telling furphys about being beautiful one day! Maybe we were too late for that one day?
Arrived in Goondiwindi - the home of the great grey, Gundsynd - at what was 1215hrs but then quickly realised that Queensland is still behind NSW and so it was only 1115hrs. We travelled the Bruxner Highway from Tenterfield and then from Goondiwindi we headed north (yippee) on the Leichhardt Highway to stop overnight in Miles (on the junction of the Warrego Highway). Fortunately, we had just missed a rather nasty thunderstorm.
Throughout the day we noticed a lot of flood debris still evident across the countryside and a lot of roadworks in place. Very hard to imagine the actual force of the water that would have gone through the area. In one section of the Bruxner Highway there was a deviation in place where the floodwaters had washed away both approaches to a reasonably new, high level concrete bridge and except for the debris on the bridge had left it in good condition. Absolutely amazing!
Today we are off to finally do some touristy things. The Miles Historical Village and then the Dogwood Crossing @ Miles (a fancy new cultural centre).
After our cultural hit we will be checking the road conditions and hope to head west to Roma. Apparently, the road was cut by floodwaters the other day. After that, who knows!!
Still haven't taken any photos - its been too grey and miserable - but hopefully soon.
At least being Team TURTLE and having a boat might get us through all of this water!!
Happy paddling!
