Downtown Derby

Only a few short days ago we left Wyndham and we are now in Derby about 200 klms north east of Broome.  We decided to come here before Broome as we had heard on the grapevine that "all of the Caravan Parks are booked out and full to overflowing".  The same came be said for Derby, but we still managed to find a very comfortable and roomy spot in one of only two caravan parks in town.

We decided that we would just head west towards Broome and then do our sightseeing on the way back.  Took us two and a bit days to travel the 900 klms with the two overnight stops being at free camps.  A rather inexpensive way to travel when you are only staying the one night and there isn't much to see.  Our first night was near Hall's Creek - unfortunately it was 16 klms out of town on what turned out to be a very rough unsealed road.  But it was a magic spot!  A lovely little swimming hole in what is usually a fairly fast flowing river and a wonderful outlook.

The next night we stayed at a roadside rest area called Ellendale - about 100 klms west of Fitzroy Crossing.  A bit basic and these days one has to be into these places no later than early afternoon otherwise there is no spots left at all.  It is just crazy with all of these old people on the road and trying to save their pennies and their children's inheritances!  Speaking of which - a lot of RV's have the old "We are SKI-ing" (Spending the Kid's Inheritance) stickers on their rigs but we saw a better one today - "What Inheritance?"

Derby is a nice little place but we don't think we could stay here for any length of time!  Lots of history and, once more, a huge muddy lake as far as the eyes can see!  Derby also has the highest tides in all of Australia - up to just over eleven metres and you should see how powerful the current is when the tide is moving - just awesome.

Put Tuf Cat into for another paddle today (Tuesday) - we think that she enjoyed it even though the water was muddy again.  We then went and procured our dinner - two very yummy mud crabs.  Not bad for a couple of hours work!!

More Mud Crabs

We even managed to get back to the boat ramp before the tide turned and sucked us out into the Indian Ocean.

Muddy Waters and Derby Port

Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will be off to our final destination!
