It's Been A While

Hmm, I might have to turn my blog into a weekly one the way things are going - all these little out of the way places we visit that don't have mobile phone coverage!  It is quite amazing how spoilt most of us have been.

Now for another catch up -

Sunday 10 July 2011
We headed out to the nearby Mirima National Park - about  two minute drive from the Kununurra CBD - a very nice little place with a couple of short walks which eventually took us to the top of the cliffs.  Some very old and nicely formed rock structures amongst them there was one called The Head Lice Dreaming.  It has been sitting up there like that for quite some time even though it looks like it could come down in a strong breeze!

Our next stop was a lookout called Kelly's Knob which offered another view of the town and nearby farms of the Ord River Scheme.  Kununurra sits large river flats and is surrounded by some great mountains.  There was obviously a lot of thought put into where the township was to be situated during the construction of the Scheme.

On the move again!!  This time we headed back east to Lake Argyle just to see what it was really like and we were not disappointed.  We originally only booked in for two nights but after The Captain had surveyed the boat ramp, the decision was made to stay for a third.  There is supposed to be lots of Sooty Grunter in the dam but we certainly didn't find any.  The only fish we managed to catch were freshwater catfish or their more exotic name of Silver Cobbler!

Once more, the mountains that enclosed the dam were majestic.  The rocks have been dated back to nearly 2,000 million years ago and considering our planet is 4,600 million years old, that's pretty old.  In fact, this region has some of the oldest rock formation on the entire planet!

Apart from the surrounding mountains, there is only two walls that help to enclose the Lake.  One is the Spillway (where we were not allowed to go) and the other wall is where they produce the hydro-electricity and only just around the corner from the boat ramp.

Just another fishing day - caught lots of Cobbler so we decided we would have them for dinner and they turned out to be very nice indeed.  Unfortunately, they are not very good fighting fish - you know that you have a bite but they don't struggle when you are pulling them in.

Our only excitement for the day was when we returned to the boat ramp. There is one thing that really upsets The Captain and that is when people stand on, or park illegally on boat ramps.  There was not one, but two tour coaches parked right on the edge of the boat ramp.  Their drivers were on the cruise boats that tour the Lake and nowhere to be seen.  The Captain wanted to write abusive messages on the windscreens - in texta - but The Deckie convinced him just to write on some paper and put it under their wipers.  We had already done that the previous day when a car and trailer were not parked properly!  It just makes it very difficult for people having to reverse their vehicles and trailers when there is not enough room due to other people lack of consideration.  The notes must have worked as everyone had behaved themselves by our last day.

Back for those elusive Grunter which didn't happen but we caught some more Silver Cobbler. And bigger ones this time!!

It didn't get away!!
Have you noticed The Captain's Halo??  A bit bent but still.......

Another Catch of the day looked like a miniature crocodile or a prehistoric fish - those teeth are nasty little things.

Crocodile Smile?

We didn't cover the entire Lake whilst we were there only about a quarter of it but what we saw was fabulous.

And to finish off the day, we went for a quick dip in the pool at the Caravan Park.
