Karumba (at last)

Finally, the intrepid Team Turtle has reached its first main destination - Karumba - "where the Outback meets the Sea" and snuggled nicely on the Gulf of Carpenteria.

We originally gave ourselves until 15 April to reach Karumba and we got here two days earlier than we had planned.  However, if it had not been for an extremely wet summer, we could have been here a lot earlier.

After a week in Normanton, we found out on Tuesday morning that the road to Karumba was finally open.  Upon a personal inspection, we realised that we were not in that great a hurry to leave (the water was still 500mm over the road and running very fast) so we stayed another night.  Up and at it early this morning, finished packing and we were heading north!!

Yes, the road was open but only just so.  The water was still 400mm over the road and still running pretty fast and there were a couple of large holes in the road which the council had been filling with small rocks and rubble over the last few days.  Poor old Turtle was popped into 4WD and we battled our way through the floodwaters.  Fortunately, we came through it all without a scratch and we kept moving on.  Oops, but what was around the bend?  More floodwaters, but the skill of the captain enabled the team to once more reach safety!!

More Floodwaters

Karumba was reached by late morning and after a quick lap around the CBD we headed for our home for the next two weeks at Karumba Point - about 5 klms out of town.  Karumba Point is at the mouth of the Norman River, has a very nice boat ramp just outside the entrance to the Caravan Park, the Tavern is 500 metres up the road and it is generally a very nice place.

To finish the day off, we wandered over to the beach to watch the sunset over water, the heavily laden prawn boats come in and an ore ship also come in to be loaded with zinc from a nearby mine.  To top it off, the weather has still been brilliant!!!
