Monday morning we awoke with breathless anticipation - were the people at the tackle shop correct and that the road to Normanton was open?? After a couple of phone calls we found out that yes, the road to Normanton was open but the road to Karumba wasn't! Oh well, at least we can get as close as we can.
Finished packing the Turtle and Tuf Cat and off we went. Headed east (groan - more headwind) and then took a left turn and headed north at Cloncurry ( more smiles).
Our overnight stay was at the Burke and Wills Roadhouse - population 5 or 6 depending on how many overseas backpackers feel that it would be a good place to save their money and get brownie points for the working visa.
Spent some time socialising with some fishermen from Victoria who were heading to Burketown for a couple of weeks. Hmm, they were still there when we left at 9 in the morning - obviously not in too much of a rush!!
Kept heading north without too much trouble. Quite a few of the causeways were still under water a little bit and then about 10klms south of town we noticed a group of council workers (or possibly wildlife rangers) trying to entice a largish local resident (one with big teeth and a snout) off the main road and back into the nearby creek!! Ahh, the wonders of the bush!!
The caravan park is currently over half full of fishing people who are heading for Karumba - only 71 klms away - and can't quite get there. Apparently, its no so much that the river is still over the bridge, but that there are a few rather large holes in the road out to Karumba.
